Ramachandra Guha – ‘Eminent Distortian’on Ahmedabad

If ever Chris Nolan needed to make ‘Inception-II’ no one could be more handy than Ramachandra Guha. Planting of spurious theories and dreams, Guha excels at it. He passes himself off as a historian and a cricket commentator. Hmmm! ‘Distortian’ may not be a word you’ll find in a dictionary but that is what Guha and his ilk are. Distort facts, distort truth, write history from figments of imagination and see ‘windmills’ where there are none. Paint places and people in colours that thrive only in the most prejudiced of minds, sometimes bordering on hatred. (Read my post ‘Ramachandra Guha’s Paintings’).
Ramachandra Guha - 'Eminent Distortian'

As a school kid you may have written essays on your trips. My trip to the zoo, my first trip to the railway station or even my first visit to an airport. Ramachandra Guha has now written an essay on his visit to Ahmedabad, probably the 21st one. Well, it starts off with a few words on Ahmedabad and then as usual with the Distortians it degenerates into a rant about Narendra Modi. It’s called  ‘Delusions of grandeur - The curious transformation of Narendra Modi’ in the Telegraph. Delusions? Oh yeah! We’ll find out who’s deluded. Here are some excerpts from the distortian’s write:

Ahmedabad is a city I know well. I must have made at least 20 trips there in the last 30 years. Going back last month, I found signs marking the distance to a certain ‘Mahatma Mandir’..... What was this landmark that I had not heard of and which was apparently so important that it had to be advertised every so often on city roads? My Amdavadi friends supplied the answer.....The first major building had been completed in time for the ‘Vibrant Gujarat’ summit held in early January; .....In this time, Modi has made a sort of reverse journey, from being a media-shy if hard-working Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh pracharak to the most self-confident and publicity-seeking of modern politicians. Viewing his position today, I am reminded of the one occasion, some 12 years ago, when I found myself in the same room as him. It was in a television studio in New Delhi, which was hosting a debate between Madhavrao Scindia of the Congress, Pramod Mahajan of the BJP, and myself (representing no party at all)....Now, of course, Modi is arrogance personified.....Narendra Modi may wish to compare himself to Mahatma Gandhi, but to this historian, he is more akin to another Gandhi, namely, Indira.....Between 1971 and 1977, Indira thought she was India, and vice versa. Modi merely thinks he is Gujarat.......Neither Mrs Gandhi then, nor Modi now, can allow that their critics may have a honest or valid point or two. By definition, all patriotic Indians had to be behind Mrs Gandhi, all Gujaratis (100 to 0) have to rally around Modi. The mandir being built 37.9 km from the hotel where I stayed in Ahmedabad is a monument not to Mahatma Gandhi, but to Narendra Modi’s megalomania....... Here is a tip to first-time visitors to Ahmedabad. If you go in search of the Mahatma, disregard the blue signs, and ask an autorickshaw to take you to the Sabarmati Ashram instead. The experience shall be nourishing, perhaps even transformative. For one thing, unlike that “mandir”, this ashram is on the human scale, with low, modest buildings and green trees around them. For another, there are no policemen either inside or outside the place. For a third, Gandhi actually lived there”.

I recommend you read the whole crap at the Telegraph so you know what this distortian is talking about. What starts off as a write on a trip to Ahmedabad turns into a deliberate and manufactured nonsense about Narendra Modi. Let’s see what Ahmedabad holds and I can confidently tell Ramchandra the spiteful that I’ve been to Ahmedabad a lot more than he ever will in his life. Here are some questions for the distortian:

1.   From your drive from the airport or railway station to your hotel, how many times did the traffic hold you up? Wherever you travelled in Ahmedabad or Gujarat did you find plenty of potholes on the roads? Was your drive smooth or was it bumpy? Did you discover that?
2.   How many beggars did you find in Ahmedabad during your stay? That’s right, how many beggars? Did they bother you all the time you commuted the streets of Ahmedabad? Unlike your communist states Gujarat does not breed beggars, no self-respecting Gujarati will ever beg. Did you discover that Mr.Distortian?
3.   How many times did the power go off in the hotel you stayed in? Did you see any UPS equipment or any generators asshole? Did you stay in comfort in your hotel with the power never going off? Gujarat is probably one state where generators don’t sell much except in case of emergency services. Did you discover that?
4.   Any average media man or so-called historian who follows the news knows about ‘Vibrant Gujarat’ and the Mahatma Mandir. Are you so dumb, ignorant and uninformed that you knew nothing about the event or the name of the place where it was being held? Are most of your writings laced with such ignorance of basic information about major events in this country? I feel confident that is how you write history too, with a jaundiced mind.
5.   In Ahmedabad, did you notice the BRTS (Bus rapid transport system) on the wide roads where good quality public buses run uninterrupted? Did you?
6.   Finally, since when did you become a shrink? You have diagnosed Modi as suffering from megalomania. What evil prejudices are you suffering from Mr. Distortian? So much that you made Ahmedabad all about Modi and nothing else! And all the other Gujaratis and other citizens are stupid puppets?

I choose not to make any comments about the nonsense Guha has written about Narendra Modi because it’s not worth it. However, imagine I had made a trip to New York sometime back and was writing about the place and my whole piece is dedicated to the sexual orientations of Rudi Guiliani. That’s how Ramachandra Guha has used his trip. He went to Ahmedabad for some purpose but the evil mind was so obsessed with Narendra Modi that he had to turn his trip into a rant against Modi. So much so that he could not see anything else about Ahmedabad and Gujarat that most visitors take back with them.

In implying ‘Modi is Gujarat and Gujarat is Modi’ like the sycophants of Indira Gandhi used to say about India, Ramachandra Guha chooses to insult the very intelligence of Gujaratis. Nobody in Ahmedabad or Gujarat puts Modi over the state. People respect him for his work, that’s all! It is Ramachandra Guha who has chosen to see Gujarat and Gujaratis through his evil obsession with Narendra Modi. Most of all Mr. Distortian, next time you go to a place, go to discover and not go with prejudices. If you want to write crap about Narendra Modi you don’t have to visit Ahmedabad, you can do that from a laptop anywhere. Which is what most of your likes do, don’t they?

  3. Guha can write all he want but this cricket historian clown turned historian turned moral police will fail. As if anyone listens and anyone cares what he belches out. People like Guha hate Modi but like eunuchs have just words to cajole themselves. Hijron ki fauj ne aaj tak Kalyug ke Hindustan mein koi yudhh nahin jeeta. Bakne do saalo ko, mar jayenge apne aap ghut ghut ke guha and company...haha. Kide aur pathar hoyenge inki kidney mein. I'll open a bloody Dom Perignon when this vile specimen dies. Salut!

  5. Assuming Modi is doing all for publicity sake and he talks more but works less. Yes, he is intolerant to criticism. Agreed. From where did this beggar write this write up? From Pak?

Who is flamboyant either Modi or this crap with this writing for cheap publicity? Has he ever been to Chennai and see the road conditions and has he spines to write about Mk and come back alive? who is autocrat?

Pen in the hand need not perforce him to scribble as he thinks fit, internet is in the hands of intellects to exchange the fact. He has come to the wrong place and let him get asylum before the sunset

  6. Good job, Ravinar. The real "curious case" is how a mediocre cricket writer became a self-proclaimed historian.

Please read the following four rebuttals as well. They re worth it! And if possible, someone e-mail all these to Ramu Guha.

I think, this man, Ramachandra Guha is the same I have seen on NDTV and CNN-IBN in the august company of Padam Shree (Post Installation of UPA-II cabinet)Ms. Barkha Dutt and Padam Shree (Post vote for Cash) Shri Rajdeep Sirdesai.

  9. I didn't knew about this idiot until your post.

Thanks for sharing, and as always a good insight.

As far as modi is concerned, he is an outstanding guy, Out of all the idiots of BJP, he is the only one who is holding strong, Some times I wonder why is BJP not able to aggregate a strong opposition when everything is going against the Manmohan's cronies.

In recent times, Modi is the only one who has managed to bring two fighting brothers together, the Ambanis's.

I am near Gujarat, and i go there often, have lot of friends there and do regular biz there, I mean everybody is happy, if any body say they are not they are lying.

  10. This guha is nothing, his achievement is nothing in life, he has become a historian bec he was called one by rajdeep sardesai, who himself is a big loser. People him just lick other peoples asses to call him a historian. I heard he has distorted indian history too.

    1. Please read his books, and then you will realize what you (and I) have missed and he has achieved. 65% of present India was born in the 80s, and the only history we have known relates to pre-independence (history textbooks). You must read his work to know the truth about the country. I am not defending his current article, of course he has his prejudices. But he has written great books on India's history which every Indian must read to have correct opinions on past events and people, rather than relying on opinions of people.

  11. Good post. Guha is a self seeking fellow. But there is no dearth of his ilk. What about Vinod Sharma,of HT ...a joker who appears regularly on various "secular" TV channels and openly laughs at whatever any BJP panelist has to say about anything?? I find him to be so arrogant and anti-modi and anti bjp that it is sickening!! And he claims to be non-partisan!!

  12. at a recent asia society meet in new york,a trip for which he was most probably sponsored, this genius of a historian /cricket expert clearly stated that he wanted pakistan to win the cricket match against india for 2 reasons, the negative one being that india would think it is a superpower instantly if it won,the positive being that pakistan DESERVED something good since the country had suffered for a long time.such a GENIUS !a genius who will say anything for pelf and publicity.

The entire article including the title was about Narendra Modi. While you might agree with Guha's opinion or not is secondary. Mr. Guha is a historian in his own right and has published several very important works. His major concern in the article is two things
    1) As a historian, he finds it ludicrous for Narendra Modi to compare himself with Mahatma. This I think most people around the world would agree. Mr. Modi has done Gujart many benefits, but he can never be Gandhi, at least at present
    2) To build an outlandish building for a frugal man who personified simplicity is again ironical.

I think Mr. Guha was right in his two points and he never talks about whether Modi is an able administrator or not. His bone of contention is different and I feel there was no distortion in his statements

The point here are as follows,
      a) What has Guha done to become a historian and a cricket commentator, no academics in history till his phd , so just because he wrote books on history doesn't make him a good historian or an average historian
Same applies for also being a cricket historian (whatever that means) atleast harsha bhogle got the intellect to talk about it, if not experience
      b) Just because Mr.Modi compared the "impact " of Gandhi in independance movement and his efforts on bring a governance system doesn't nowhere in wildest of the context leads to an "arrogantComparison "..
      c) Why guha is more concerned about belittling Mr.Modi is the point of above discussion as him(guha )being a novice Distorian against a Cheif Minister ( you may say he did or didn't do anything to the state ), nevertheless a head of the state ??
d)If guha or you is more concerned about the Arrogance of Mr.Modi, what surprises me most is the silence of you lambs when Ms.Mayawati has her own Statues all over the state or Robert vadra calling u and me as mango people of banana republic, has anybody gone blind, eh!!!? ( i can go on like this....)
e)What is more ironical than a building for a frugal man of simplicity is the Countless Yojanas, Stadiums, airports, districts, towns, named after a family who has done little than what Narasimha roa had done in his brief period ( here again i have remind u about the mayawati and elepahan statues
      )
So instead of pointing @people u please understand that if u r pointing a finger " @people", rest 4 fingers points at you...

Gujurat is part of India only not a separate country and it does not have highest per capita income or literacy. Shri Jyoti Basu remains longest serving chief minister & Manmohan Singh has studied at world class reputed institute when Modi may be struggling in some b-grade course. Hinduism is a beautiful religion & India our country we must not allow people like Modi to insult us with his autocratic acerbic style of functioning.

For in almost every post I see your attitude of 'Hate Congress, Support BJP'!
If you are an sensible Indian (who am I kidding, you certainly aren't) then you would see what your BJP does to the minorities in India, particularly Gujarat!
I don't support Congress but I certainly oppose BJP for it's a right wing fascist organisation which wants India just for the Hindus and in the 'Democratic Republic of India' this can't be accepted! If BJP is in rule then gradually it would turn India into a Hindu version of Saudi Arabia! And dumb fucks like you would surely love that! (Yes, I am giving you a taste of your own medicine, the kinds of words you use for the secular people who don't support BJP and the 'Mass Murderer' (your favorite term isn't it?? ;)) Narendra Modi)
And last but not the least, what I consider more big a threat to democracy is biased and non secular blogs like this one's of your rather than the media which you term 'corrupt' if their ideologies don't match with yours!

You blame newsgroups like NDTV not showing Modi's achievements in Vibrant Gujarat coz (as per you) they are anti-Modi, why don't you act like a good journalist and report both sides of the stiry rather than the biased version that you righteously portray!!

  20. To the last commentator,

Its pity that no-one is neutral and no-one is perceived neutral. If one speaks against Muslim he automatically becomes BJP/RSS member and if one speaks against Hindus, he becomes Congress member.

But the fact is, in the world, there are many muslim countries and there is enough support to them in media/writings etc. but hardly there is any support for any Hindu notion/cause. After all Hindus are people and they have right to defend themselves and defending themselves does not make them anti-Muslim.

This situation have given birth to these bloggers who cannot keep tolerating the falsehood being propagated by the media always against anything that has to do with Gujarat/Modi/Hindus etc.

Do you not think the channels like NDTV, CNN-IBN and well known English media has done injustice by telling one side of the story always? So who will tell the other side of the story?

Any column you read from well-known English journalists always has something negative and something that would make reader feel guilty. They behave like they are from different planet observing the people of India and as people of India we are all morons. If you think that is not true - then are you not too naive?

It is this bunch of negativism among the english media - that made gujarat = modi and modi = gujarat. Search word 'Gujarat' in Google News and tell me if you find any news item that does not mention 'Modi' word as well? Can you not find anything about Gujarat that is not related to Modi or even politic or even communal sentiments?

Why can you not go find villages where people may have made check-dams for themselves or created lakes w/o govt help? find out about where all these big industrialists coming from in gujarat and what environment they grew up in? why gujaratis are considered better entrepreneurs? Are you saying there is no other subject journalists can find about gujarat?

same goes for Hinduism itself - can you find nothing good to note about Hindus in the news? Do you not think the Hindu 'traits' of the parents of these journos only made them so 'liberal' and 'secular' that they can be against hindus - if their parents were of different religion they could not have been as 'secular'..

That's what is wrong with you people, mixing religion with state and politics! And the attitude that all muslims are terrorists and hindus are holier than thou and muslims should have a separate nation and hindus should have separate! This is nothing but petty-mindedness of dividing the world on the name of religion!
Now suppose this happens, just as Muslims are doing, every country starts having an attitude like yours that it is reserved for people of a particular religion only; it will surely increase the hatred amongst the countries on the brink of putting them at war (that's what happening with muslim countries who follow this ideology, and you want India to be like them)!
Apart from that think about the free movement of people, see Israel's relations with Arab nations, Jews are not alllowed to enter in any Arab nation, and not just jews, any non jew who has been to Israel is treated the same way!
Yes, there are many muslim countries in the world but look at the level of their importance in international matters, mixing religion with state results into them being termed as extremist people (and hence USA goes on a war with them!
And yes, quoting USA, let's take its example, it has been since centuries the safe place for the people who in their home countries are exploited mainly because of religion, millions of jews and arabs fled to USA, and because of people like you even Indians move their to live a free life, free from religious extremism that people like you support and spread! And in economic terms keeping such open minded attitude made USA a super power, and India being the largest democracy in the world if moves towards your path, it would be a doom for India in economic terms too like other islamic states!

From your tone and language only I can say
    1) You have lot of stereotypes
    2) Pre-conceived mind
    3) Thinking dependent on pro-congi views
    4) Negativism towards life

You should note very well that whatever you write is all your assumptions about me (or about any right-minded person) rather than facts. None of the point in my earlier comment indicated mix of religion with politics or making India Hindu State or getting rid of any particular community other than hindus or anything like that.

But based on my arguments you just assumed that I am one of those people who think like whatever you wrote.

You praise US - which is again your assumption of how US is. I lived in US for 14 years and all I can say is people are more politically correct here than back in India. None of what you say is politically correct no matter how better you think your intentions are.

My comments were simply to tell you why Ravinar is writing this blog and he has every right to write it because someone has to speak up. Thanks to Blog/Twitter/Internet that we all know what goes behind the door among these media crooks. Ravinar cannot be called Mediacrook because people don't pay to read what he thinks. Neither he has any tv-channel or air time or printed magazine or column or news paper.

While I don't want to mix religion + politics - you should not that India is secular not because of Barkha or Rajdeep or Sanghavi or any of those hotshots - but because the fundamentalists are not enough fundamentalists. because the 'majority' respects the law and considers all religions equal.

US has its own greatness - no doubt! but behind all that are some people, their greatness and their belief in their religion and culture. Beliefs and culture cannot be imported. Nation's own background can only uplift itself. Democracy, Secularism, Equality are all there in the blood and beliefs of Indian people but you cant see that. and because you try to teach that as foreign idea it never gets accepted. US has largest population of catholic and religion is a backbone of this country. Dollar bill clearly says 'In God We Trust' but blind and psuedo-seculars of india cannot read or understand that.

Psuedoseculars think that hindu-bashing means secularism. is that fair? you dont have to say negative about one to please another. You have to find positive ways of pleasing both to be true neutral or secular.

We can go on.. but hope your closed mind opens up to make sensible argument.

The number of so called intellectual elites who think they are a class above all of us so called simpletons will write much more nonsense.... but unfortunately for them the people of India are no longer the "we will swallow whatever news you throw our way" crowd..... we question, we see if there is logic, we see backgrounds of people and their bias and then judge them for what they write as intellectual pieces or critiques... and if that honesty is not there... it is discarded and the only people who will refer to it with fervour and enthusiasm will be the macualay putras and putris!!!!
